WALKER MOORE IS A GENIUS
I was given this book by a friend and once I started reading it I could not put it down. This book is so simple to read, yet it is so profound. The points made by Walker Moore are insightful, real, and tested through his experience (especially with those two kids of his). If you have kids, are a kid, have been a kid, or ever seen a kid, buy this book now and you will know why they do the things they do!

Dr. Moore's book is a simple and exact tool for parenting.

Acoustics : an introduction to its physical principles and applications
Published in Unknown Binding by McGraw-Hill Book Co. ()
Author: Allan D. Pierce
Average review score:

Ausgezeichnet
Das Buch ist wunderbar. Herr Doktor Pierce hat ein ausgezeichnet Buch doch geschrieben.

A Deep and Classic Approach to Acoustics
Texts on acoustics approach the subject from many different angles and at many different levels. Pierce's text is classic, rigorous and complete. It should serve the needs of serious students of acoustics for a variety of purposes - musical acoustics and sound are my particular perspective.

Some writers cater their approach to electrical engineers or to mechanical engineers, assuming that by tieing everything to those disciplines they will make the effort easier for their readers. This may serve well those who come from those disciplines, but may not serve others well and may not serve all applications of acoustics equally well either. Pierce does not do so. His approach is rigorously mathematical and pure, going to the heart of the matter, rather than one of attempting to cut corners by making analogies to other fields that you may or may not know.

The book is not for the faint of heart or the mildly curious, it is deep and demanding. But he organizes it superbly and writes intelligently with a wonderful way of integrating the history and development of the science, and the graphics are exceptionally clear and communicative.

Highly recommended for the very serious about this subject. My favorite among the books I have consulted.

Best of Cordwainer Smith
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (June, 1985)
Author: John J. Pierce
Average review score:

Wonderful mythological fantasy
Cordwainer Smith (whose real name was Paul Linebarger) in his
fiction invented a truly marvelous, internally consistent
mythological fantasy world, disguised as science-fiction. His
world comes across as something very rare--vivid and believable. You actually come to believe in a world where cats pilot spaceships and regret that humans are humans, because if they were cats that cat could fall in love with them. Or a prison world in which the inhabitants are condemned for centuries to grow body parts--all over their bodies. Even his titles are great--"Alpha Ralpha Boulevard" and "The Ballard of Lost C'Mell." This is great stuff that will stay in your mind for years, and I highly recommend it.

Cordwainer's Worlds: from 6,000 AD to 16,000 AD.
This compilation of tales is a great introduction to the people (both real, and animal derived), politicial systems and worlds of Cordwainer Smith. Lyrical prose and haunting poetry are the hallmarks of this great writer, and the cast of characters while often changing from one short story to another have a historical, if not familial continuity - witness the Vomacts who held their name for over 10,000 years. The only downside to this book is that it is a "Best of" and therefore incomplete - hence the rating of 9/10. But it has a great timeline listing with (I think) all the stories listed so that you can complete the series. Note: Reviewed version was printed 1975, paperback from Ballantine Books, JJ Pierce editor. If you like Science Fiction, Cordwainer is a MUST!

Blood and Thunder: A Nathan Heller Novel
Published in Audio Cassette by B & B Audio Inc (July, 1995)
Authors: Max Allan Collins and Huey Pierce, Long
Average review score:

Wonderfully entertaining historical fiction
Most of the Nate Heller books are good. This one is very good. I enjoy the characters and the ties to history. Basically, a Forrest Gump/Spencer type of read.

Nate Heller tries to stop Huey Long from being killed.
It was an excellent book. A little bit too much language. It got crazy on pg. 140 (read that page). It had a whole bunch of explosive sex. And a whole lot of bloodshed.

A present to unwrap every day
This lovely little volume is a gift that keeps on giving. Its essays are simple, elegant, soulful, inspiring. And thought-provoking. You may well find yourself searching your own Christmas memories, and finding gems you had long forgotten. Which is what this book is all about -- seeing, hearing, remembering those things we take for granted, and cherishing them anew. This is a book to feed the heart, and the soul. And it's just the right size for stocking stuffing!

Circle of Magic: Sandry's Book

Author: Tamora Pierce
Average review score:

AWESOME AND EXCITING
A magical and exciting book for people who love fantasy. Sandary, Daja, Tris, and Briar find themselves living together at Discipline. Briar doesn't like Discipline because he is the only boy. Sandary, Daja, Tris, and Briar find themselves getting into fights on the streets with other kids. One day they find themselves in a lot more trouble than a fight on the street. Can each of them call upon their special magic to save each other from certain death?

A Number One!
Anyone who has read even one of Tamora Pierce's enthralling books will know the colourful fantasy worlds that you get pulled into. This book, along with all the other books by TP, gets 100%!
Sandry's Book, or The Healing in the Vine as it is commonly called in Sydney, is centred around four children called Sandry, Briar, Tris and Daja. They are brought to the Winding Circle Temple to learn magical arts, only to all be placed in the isolation home, Discipline, for bad behaviour. At first they argue amongst themselves, but eventually they realise each of them possesses powers and join forces.
Many of you may want to read this book because you have read the bestseller, high praised Lioness(Alanna) series. This captivating, wondrous page-turner is another sublime example of Tamora Pierce's talent of writing and imagination.

Clinical Surgery
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Science Inc (15 January, 1996)
Authors: Alfred Cuschieri, Thomas P. J. Hennessy, Roger M. Greenhalgh, Pierce A. Grace, and David Rowley
Average review score:

Excellant General Surgery Text Book
This is an excellant text book of general surgery. The book covers all the basic topics of surgery in a great mannor. There are plenty of good quality pictures and illustrations. The book is well divided into chapters. There is a summary at the end of each topic which gives a reivew of all the contents. I would highly recommend this book for rmedical students and surgical residents.

Outstanding introductory surgical text
I am a graduating senior medical student, and I happened to come upon this text quite by accident. Intending only to browse it for the moment, I found the text to be captivating. The author gives a clear and concise overview of every major surgical topic in a way that is approachable and easily understandible. The tables and figures nicely complement the "high yield" text. I only wish I had this text when I did my surgical clerkship.

Radiology Review
The layout of the book is very helpful. The chapter's are full of information and at the end ask a few questions. Gives great explanations instead of just a book full of questions. This book went over information that was very helpful and that I had not covered during my radiology classes. After taking the pre-Rad exams, I was glad I had read the book.

The Custom Furniture Sourcebook: A Guide to 125 Craftsmen
Published in Paperback by Taunton Press (14 September, 2001)
Author: Kerry Pierce
Average review score:

Beautiful !
I love this book. It is filled with beautiful, unique pieces of furniture. There are a few extreme designs, but most of the pieces you could imagine having in your own home. All of the pictures are in color and a good size so you can see the details clearly. Besides giving the names and postal addresses of the craftsmen, the author also furnishes websites and email addresses for many of them. In the back there is a regional index and a style index which are both very useful. Even though this book is paperback, I think it would make a great coffee table book because every aspect of it is beautifully designed; the text, the photographs and the layout.

Very inspiring to my own work!
(I looked over this book in the store, and hope to get it for Christmas)

Lots of great pictures! If you are a long time Fine Woodworking reader you will recognize many of them. However, you notice other nuances when they are placed with unseen pictures of the craftsman's other work.

The wide variety of styles is very useful for forming your own sense of design and proportion. You see traces of James Krenov's style on many pages. I found it more useful and inspiring than Taunton's Design Book series.

If you were looking to hire somone to make you a custom piece I suspect this book would be quite a help, but I'm looking at it as more of a survey of current work. I plan to use it to help refine where I want to go with my own furniture design and woodworking.
